At the weekend I bought a little smoked garlic cheese at the farmers market. It has the most beautiful green and cream waxy coat and luckily it tastes just amazing (though this was for me of secondary importance…).

In the woods today the green-garlic theme continues with carpets of the wild stuff.
On my way to a friends house I took a wrong turn in the woods and got slightly lost. It was deadly quiet under the trees apart from the occasional startled pigeon. I scrambled through bracken, up steep banks of dried pine needles, clambered across waterfalls, through bright and grassy clearings and dark dense woodland, over fallen tree-trunks,

past some bemused looking sheep, over barbed wire, through a field and someone’s back-garden to find the road again… A mini adventure on my own doorstep.

I reached my friends house completely unscathed (...despite the sea of nettles I wadded through) and he kindly gave me a lovely cup of tea, a bag full of gorgeous cuttings from his garden and a lift home. Phew…

Daphne says:Oh Paul, I wasn’t going to mention it but I did see a bear in the woods, but he was busy ‘doing something’ and knew he wouldn’t bother me.
PĂ©itseoga, I think that is probably the same stuff… In dutch it’s called ‘Daslook’ which is ‘Badger-leek’ roughly translated… Funny they don’t have the stuff in Ireland, you can usually find it in great drifts on shady riverbanks and you’ll get an onion-y whiff if you walk through it…The leaves are edible and delicious in salads or soup. Though not so good if the plant has finished flowering… I hope you find some! :)

callycreates says:You can eat the garlicy flowers too.
What a delightful adventure, and nice weather for it.
I see you’ve been working up a storm with those magnificent illustrative hands of yours. Like the polar foxes best of all. And you’ve reminded me about that program on Thursday night about the man that lived with the wolves, I must see that, looks amazing and intense.
I can just imagine all your new plants looking great against your newly painted fence. Perfect.
